Variant as Product Mode
Updated 2026-03-11
The Variant as Product setting lets you display each product variant as its own selectable item inside the bundle builder. Instead of showing a single product card with a “View Options” button, each variant (e.g., size, color, or flavor) appears as its own card with its own price, inventory, and Add button.
This is useful when your customers should pick specific variants directly — for example, choosing “Medium Red T-Shirt” and “Large Blue T-Shirt” as separate items in a bundle, rather than selecting “T-Shirt” and then choosing options in a popup.
How It Works
- Go to your Shopify Admin → Apps → Bundable
- Edit an existing bundle or create a new one
- Scroll to the Product Display section
- Toggle on Enable variant as product
- Save the bundle
Once enabled, every product in the bundle’s collection (or hand-selected product list) that has multiple variants will be “exploded” into individual cards. Each card shows:
- The product name combined with the variant name (e.g., “T-Shirt - Medium / Red”)
- The variant’s own price
- The variant’s own inventory and availability
- The variant’s own image (if one is assigned in Shopify), otherwise the main product image
- A direct Add button (no variant selector popup needed)
Products that only have a single variant (e.g., no size or color options) will continue to display normally as a single card.
Variant Images
Each variant card will display the image assigned to that specific variant in Shopify. For example, if your “T-Shirt” product has a red variant with a red photo and a blue variant with a blue photo, each card will show the correct color image.
To assign images to variants in Shopify:
- Go to the product in your Shopify admin
- Scroll to the Media section and upload images for each variant
- Click on a variant and assign the correct image to it
If a variant doesn’t have its own image assigned, the card will fall back to the product’s main image.
When to Use This
- Snack or food boxes — each flavor variant appears as its own pick
- Clothing bundles — customers choose specific size/color combinations directly
- Sample packs — show each sample variant as an individual item
- Any time you want customers to see and select at the variant level instead of the product level
Works With All Bundle Types
This feature works with:
- Single-SKU bundles — the selected variants are combined into one bundle line item
- Multi-SKU bundles — each selected variant is added as its own cart line item
- Multi-step (Build-a-Box) bundles — variants are exploded within each step
- Collection-based and hand-selected product sources
Things to Keep in Mind
- A product with 10 variants will display as 10 separate cards when this setting is on. Consider adjusting your Items per Page setting if your collections have many variants.
- Inventory is tracked per-variant, so each card reflects the correct stock level.
- Discounts (percentage, fixed, and tiered) apply to each variant individually, just as they would for any product in the bundle.
